Blues is a Black American dance, and Huntsville Blues Dance is committed to centering Black voices and Black history in our community, as well as to amplify our belief that Black Lives Matter. Anyone who shares those goals with us is welcome in the space. If you are still learning about Black history, Black culture, and the Black Lives Matter movement — and all non-Black attendees are assumed to be still learning about these things — we ask that you use Huntsville Blues Dance as a place to keep your mind open, listen with empathy, and let your dancing and your presence become a stepping stone in supporting this urgent message.
We do not tolerate discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, age, disability, physical appearance, body size, religion (or lack thereof), or dance ability.
Be mindful of your partner's body while dancing. If your partner speaks up about something being uncomfortable, take that feedback in stride and work to adjust. All Huntsville Blues Dance teachers and organizers will be happy to work with you to adjust anything that may be causing discomfort to your partner. We're all learning!
Harassment includes but is not limited to: deliberately offensive verbal comments, offensive verbal comments about any group listed in our discrimination policy, inappropriate comments about people's bodies, inappropriate physical contact, unwelcome sexual attention, inappropriate sexual language, stalking, nudity, unwanted photography or videography, deliberate intimidation, a pattern of excessive attention to/hitting on new and/or younger attendees, and blatantly disruptive behavior.
Anyone can say no to a dance for any reason with no explanation.
Please ask for dances verbally, so that people have an opportunity to consent.
Please refrain from unsolicited feedback, unless you are experiencing anything uncomfortable or painful.
If you are experiencing any pain, discomfort, or irritating injuries while dancing or practicing with someone, please speak up! We value your personal safety.
Please refrain from wearing strong perfumes and colognes, as some of our attendees have sensitivities.
